She Takes Up Space: A Pink Couch in a Field

Some photo shoots start with a location. Some start with an outfit. This one started with a completely ridiculous prop: a pink inflatable couch from Amazon.

And it became one of my favorite sessions of the year.

The Original Vision (Still Coming)

Here’s what I originally envisioned: nighttime. City streets. A pink inflatable couch sitting in the middle of the road, holding up traffic. Cars backed up behind her because this girl just decided this is where she’s sitting. The world will adjust.

It’s that perfect tension between “rich girl who doesn’t care” and “I’m taking up space and that’s okay.” The rules don’t apply to this girl, both because she doesn’t recognize them and because she’s living in her own reality.

For weeks, every time I was out and about driving around Nashville, I was also scouting for a location where we could fake this without actually blocking traffic. I still want to shoot that version. But timing didn’t work out for an evening session, so we pivoted.

Who Is She?

Before this shoot, I wrote down exactly who this character is:

She forces people to stop and notice, and they choose to do so freely. She is her own person. She cannot be contained, cannot be caged, cannot be described.

That energy? That’s what I wanted to capture. And when I explained the concept to Caitlin, she got it immediately. No confusion, no hesitation, just “I’m in.”

The Outfit That Sealed It

Caitlin sent over outfit options, including a beautiful white dress we’d planned to use. But then she sent this outfit (the one you see in the photos) and we both knew instantly: that’s it. That’s her.

Maximalist. Bold. Unapologetic. It fit the vision so perfectly I’m still grateful she happened to have all those pieces just sitting in her closet ready to go.

The pink couch. The statement outfit. A field location that felt both whimsical and grounded. It all came together in a way that felt inevitable once we were there.

When Everything Almost Goes Wrong (But Doesn’t)

Here’s what almost derailed this session:

  • The Amazon delivery date kept changing (would the couch even arrive?)
  • Weather looked iffy
  • A cop was parked in our original shooting spot
  • It was getting dark faster than expected
  • Caitlin had another commitment right after

But once we were both on location with that ridiculous pink couch, everything fell into place. That’s the magic of planning what you can control and letting the rest work itself out.

We even squeezed in a few experimental shots with cars at the end, playing with that original nighttime traffic concept, just without the darkness. They’re not perfectly executed (that wasn’t the plan for this session), but I love where that vision is heading. We’ll circle back to it later this year with the right location and timing.

Why This Session Matters for Unique Photoshoots

If you’re planning a photoshoot, like a senior photoshoots or just something for fun, and want something that feels completely different from the standard poses and locations, this is your permission slip: bring the ridiculous prop. Choose the bold outfit. Create a character, not just a photo.

As a Nashville photographer specializing in editorial photography, I’m always looking for concepts that feel fresh, unexpected, and unapologetically bold. Sessions like this prove you don’t need a massive budget or elaborate setup, just a vision, a prop from Amazon, and someone willing to embody the energy.

Book your unique senior session and let’s create something that’s entirely, unapologetically you. Whether that’s a pink couch in a field, an urban nighttime concept, or something we haven’t even thought of yet.

The pink inflatable couch is still available. The nighttime traffic vision is still happening. And I’m still looking for more people who get it.
